It is characteristically crisp and clear tasting, almost lager-like, while being dark and malty and frankly, delicious. The dark "ale" is a copper-colored style of top-fermenting brew made in the northwest of Germany and is especially associated with the area around the city of Düsseldorf and the Niederrhein. The typical "Altbier" has a smoother, cleaner, less fruity character than that found in most Belgian ales.
